Why I Love All Things Brazil and Brazilian
88
Brazil is a fascinating country full of color and life. It is exotic. It has what the rest of the world does not. Brazil is enchanting, mesmerizing, wild, and civilized. The brazilian culture is as complex as any, perhaps even more so than most due to its vast diversity in history, culture, religions, landscape, creatures, peoples, and more.
The extremes in Brazil are wide, from wealthy to impoverished, from rain-forests to big cities, from brilliant colors, to camouflaged; everywhere you turn, an extreme juxtaposition can be found. It is because of these things, and more, that I find Brazil so fascinating.
Not all my Brazilian loves are shared here, but I think there's enough to make you fall in love, if you aren't already, with this amazing country. Enjoy.
Brasil, eu te amo.
The Brazilian national anthem, Hino Nacional Brsileiro, is NOT what I expected. It's rather charming and Victorian in its sound, and a bit patriarchal.
Between the time of its composition by Francisco Manuel da Silva in 1822, to the time it received its definitive lyrics 100 years later in 1922, Hino Nacional Brazsileiro had two other lyrical versions. However, it is not always performed with lyrics. Often times it is played in its orchestral instrumental version.
An interesting law is attached to the Brazilian national anthem. If the instrumental version is played, it is quite alright to stop after the first verse. However, should you choose to sing this anthem, you are required, by law, to sing both verses; you CANNOT quit after just one sung verse. This is one of the reasons you will more than likely hear the instrumental version played at sporting events - in a rush to start the party, one could say.
Here are two versions I found which I rather enjoyed. The first gives a nice edgy electric guitar played with the classic sound of the instrumental version. No lyrics involved but the ones you hear in this terrific guitar playing. The second clip features a cultured native sharing this song acapella, and according to a Brazilian reader, tuuky, she is making up her own lyrics. She's rather cute and I had to share her version with you.

THE COUNTRY OF BRAZIL
SOME FACTS:
- Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world.
- The official language in Brazil is Portuguese
- The Brazilian flag (which is absolutely gorgeous) displays Brazil's motto proudly.
- Brazil's motto is "Ordem e Progresso" (Portuguese) which translates to "Order and Progress"
- Federative Republic of Brazil is Brazil's official name.
- Brazil's capital city is Brazilia.
- Brazil comes from the Portuguese and Spanish word, brasil, which means : the name of an East Indian tree with reddish-brown wood from which a red dye was extracted. The Portuguese found a New World tree related to the Old World brasil tree when they explored what is now called Brazil, and as a result they named the New World country after the Old World tree.
- The people of Brazil are predominantly Roman Catholic, though you will certainly find other religeons including Umbanada (see video to right), Jehovas Witness, Budhism, and more.
- The largest population of Japanese people (outside of Japan) live in Brazil.
- From 1500-1822, Brazil was colonized by Portugal.
- Brazil became independent on September 7, 1822, however their independence from Portugal was not recognized until August 29, 1825.
- Sugar from Brazil was a large and lucrative export for Portugal, until it was found nearer to Europe, and the price of sugar fell.
- Diamond and gold deposites were found in Brazil in the 18th century. Use of African and American Indian slaves were used as escavators. The monies from the diamonds and gold were mostly used to decrease Portugal's debt.
- Brazil's largest city is São Paulo, located in the Southeast region of São Paulo State.
- Brazil is made up of 5 regions and 26 states.
- The equator runs through Brazil.
- The climate of Brazil is mostly tropical, however Brazil is home to five climatic subtypes.

BRAZILIAN WILDLIFE
The Amazon Rainforest, the Atlantic Forest, and the Cerrado (the heartland of Brazil), make up the largest parts of Brazil.
The wildlife there is extremely diverse. It is estimated that these ecosystems hold approximately four million species, most found nowhere else in the world.
New species are discovered daily. Amazing and true.
The Cerrado used to be a wasteland. Thanks to thousands of scientists and agricultural advancement due to the determination of three men, the Cerrado is now abundant and fruitful. The transformation of this land disputes the need for ANY logging and clearcutting in the Amazon Rainforest. BRAZILIAN DANCE AND COSTUMES
Brazilians love to dance. They love carnivals. So it makes sense, then, that their largest and most internationally known and celebrated celebration is the Carnaval. Street parades, music, dance, food, costumes, wonderful crazy times, this festivity marks the beginning of lent, held 40 days before Easter, and is much like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
As you can see from their costumes, while similar in style, they are as colorful and diverse as the peoples and creatures that inhabit this great country that is Brazil. Brazil is where the inspiration comes from. From here, and, well, the rest of the world.
Fantastic headdresses, makeup, sexy dancing shoes for the ladies (my personal favorites are the sexy but sturdy platform sandals; I must say I'd like a pair), flowing tails, feathers, and more comprise these glorious costumes that lift the spirits and inspire miraculous celebration. EVERYONE participates and celebrates in one way or another.
This celebration is so awesome it is mimiced around the world, from Japan to Hollywood, from Minnesota to Poland.
Famous Brazilian dances: Samba, Salsa, Capoeira.
Frieda's favorite Brazilian dance: You can often find Frieda doing the Salsa any time the mood strikes, and it does strike often despite her getting on in years.
BRAZILIAN CARNIVAL - Rio de Janeiro
BRAZILIAN LINGERIE
Ah, the beauty and sensuality of a Brazilian cut cannot be beat. Brazilian panties are arguably the sexiest, loveliest, most comfortable of cuts, and comes in a variety of styles.
What exactly is a Brazilian cut? It is the same as any other, only utilizing less material. For a Brazilian boy short panty, for example, (my personal favorite,) one of its features is that there is a sexier peak at the hind area, offering more of a looksy (see the third photo to the right, which insidentaly is worn by a Brazilian model, Adriana Lima, the fourth highest paid model in the world).
Brazilian cuts are also known for their lack of panty line look, as seams are placed perfectly as to not show off the fact that you are wearing them. This is especially true when it comes to the thong.
Now, I am not a thong wearer, but this does explain the theory of less is more and the popularity of less material in Brazilian lingerie.

BRAZIL THE MOVIE
Let's face it. Brazil is a cult classic. A Pythonesque version of George Orwell's classic 1984. It's one of the best satires ever written, directed, and performed.
It has not much to do with the country of Brazil. The only thing Brazilian in it aside from its name, is the song, Brazil. But that is enough.
The song is the hope. The Brazil of the famous song of the same title is where all is well. It represents love, peace, excitement, the exotic, romance, the some day, the past, the moment, the escape of everyday life, of one day going back to all the pleasures, moments, memories, that are Brazil.

Frieda, I loved the hub....so much interesting information.Unfortunately, I couldn't get any of the videos to work, not even by going to utube. Darn!
Where did you find all those great videos Frieda? Just a fabulous hub. makes me want to head on down to Rio tomorrow:-)
After this, we may have to make the trip south... nice...again.
Fabulous in-depth hub. Lots of info and well laid out. I learned quite a bit.
Oh look, there is more at the bottom! :O
I will have to come back and check that out. :)
Frieda wonderful hub. I have always had a fascination with Brazil but have not yet had the chance to visit. Thanks for sharing.
Frieda, You have given me more of a reason to visit Brazil! I enjoyed my cup of tea while reading your words and viewing the videos. I have seen Brazil portrayed in the media mostly during carnival time. Another wonderful visit to your HubPage, Frieda.
soz, I was working on some of the grammar...I do not go back to read them awhile after I post, but since I am out of school for a week, I wanted to vist them again with new eyes to see what needed changing. Re-visiting my 'feelings' so to speak. I will repost them soon.
Oh, I did not mean to! I have only just realized that I could re-edit them one at a time -duh- gosh, I really needed a break from class. I did it because my professor read some of my hubs here and said that I needed to 'renew' them? I do not know what he meant...so I sorta freaked out as well! I reverted back to that 'oh no, I'm gonna get an F' mentality.
Ah well, I have also only just realized...he can't give me an 'F' on here...I am so gullible, geez!
ok, I seen a few that needed grammar checks, and I was spelling Cris A's name 'Chris A'. Just small, minor fixes. I am also working on a poem I wrote in response to Cris's poem 'foreplay', so I am really nervous about that one.
Gosh, you've got one great Brazil article here! Send it to the Brazilian Embassy (if you haven't done so yet) and expect to get a free ticket to Rio! :)
Oh, and muito obrigada with the actual links! Besos!
Great hub great videos and some really interesting facts about Brasil. Of course I have a different take on a Brazilian! But there you go. I have been to Rio and watched the samba dancers and been to the mountain with the giant statue of Christ, We also took a tour by the favelas and the botanical gardens. I also spent a few hours on Copacabana beach watching the girls and the muscle men working out. Fascinating place.
Frieda, it all sounds fantastic. I'd so love to go, but it's a big, big trip from my corner of the world, and very pricy. I have friends from Brazil who have settled here, and they are colourful fun-loving people. It must be a national characteristic!
Heeeey Frieda! Long time no speak, how come you don't come over my place any more? LOL
I've never been to Brazil (or Brasil) - the place where one can see a toucan or three ;) But I must admit I have always been fascinated by all things Brazilian... so yeah, one day i'll have to head down there and have a look!!! Seriously though, awesome hub and a lovely collection of colorful pictures and videos.
OS2 - I came back to see if you had done a "cut and paste" of your face on the brazillian dancer's body. That would be fun!
-OS1
LOL - I spend more time trotting around here giving other people ideas!!! LOL!! not so much brilliant as, perhaps, twisted and nosey...
You make a very compelling argument for loving Brazil!
I noticed on AEvan's elvis hub that Paper Moon can do Elvis? I would love a hub on his "Elvis" !! LOL!!!
I'd love to go to Brazil. . . but since I can't (unless I walk there!), it's good to have this great hub to read. Thanks for all the photos and videos, too. Very educashunal!
I love Brazil, no one parties like the Brazilians, they are so warm and nice and of course they make the best bikinis in the world!
Thanks for this Hub. I've always wanted to go to Brazil but like you and Teresa would have to walk there! And my cross-ocean boots aren't working too good!
Love Brazilian music especially.
Love and peace
Tony
I took a Brazillian history course and learned quite a bit about the country that I never would have had the motivation to learn on my own. Two books I read about Brazillian women that I highly recommend are Child of the Dark and Brazillian Women Speak.
I was a history major and took the Brazilian history course as part of my Latin America concentration requirement. We had Spanish courses, but we did not have Portuguese. I have a basic knowledge of Spanish and French from high school and college courses, so I have noticed I pick up basic words in all of the Romance languages, but that is about it.
I forgot to mention those books are some what obscure, so in this case ordering those volumes online might be best. Great hub by the way!
What's more? A billion or a brazillian?
I just love the way they play football, probably says something about the spirit of the country.
It does look so exotic. I've never been but would love to go one day. Oh, well...... Thanks for another great piece!
Informative, enticing hub. I just read a travel book about Brazil and found a lot of the sentiments shared by world travelers mirrored in your hub - really drives the point home for me! There seems to be a zest for life, a passion, that is hard to find elsewhere. They've taken street soccer and turned it into a national icon and also into the seleção of worldwide acclaim - how cool is that? The downside, of course, are poverty and social stratification. Books like Hecht's "At Home in the Street" and Scheper-Hughes' "Death Without Weeping" reflect different aspects of the country and have touched me deeply.
Look at all of these comments! WOW! You are a popular writer, Frieda. And it is justified. This is a vivid account of a fascinating country. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Cool hub! I love Brazilian music and their rain forest and beaches too. It's a dream destination for me. But for now, I'd have to settle with my Havaianas and listening to Astrud Gilberto! :D
Nice favorites, I like them too though I would put A Certain Sadness along with them. :D
Damn, Brazil looks awesome! Some day I will go there.
Frieda,
Thank you for mentioning my name in your interview. That was an unexpected pleasure and honor. And congratulations on your success!
Frieda my kind of hub - well written and full of great visuals - well done!
And I thought I was alone in my fascination with Brazil. Ego! Now I know why. Colorful, loving, dangerous, musical, sensual. Great hub.
This is one of the interesting and educative hubs I have ever read. I love it.
Hello Freida, I really like this Brazil blog, and it makes me want to go there someday. You did a terrific job :)
What a fantastic hub! I am sold on Brazil. Now I NEED to go!
I really enjoyed reading this hub. It's very detailed and I learned so much about Brazil.
it is a nice post with have a nice topic.keep it up…
Wow...What a country! I'd love to go and visit Brazil. However...enjoyed a visit down to Brazil..via this hub, though! Great Hub, Frieda.
I have many brazilian friends here on cape cod mass and i cant wait to go there sumday!!! (= the most exotic and beautiful ppl come from there!
hope it's alright to post and hope I am not being too picky about it either.
"The official language in Brazil is Portuguese (a mixture of French and Spanish)"
this statement is incorrect or imprecise, although I think was said just to make the bridge between similarities there may exist and someone that doesn't actually speak to understand what type of language it is but Italian, French, Catalan, Romanian, Spanish and Portuguese are all descended from Latin, so one isn't a mix of 2 or 3 combined in, they only share a common origin.
I love Brazil starting with the amazing cultural differences, the music widely known...Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim (many many others, so many!)...perfect combination between music and poetry, the food, all the nature diversity along the gigantic cultural diversity of people, that is truly unique..etc, etc!
Frieda, I too love Brazil and the culture, though I have never been. I knew many Brazilians in NY, and dated a girl from Brazil for two years. Needless to say, I learned much about the people on the culture. Great, in-depth piece on a fascinating place!
Hi Frieda,
Thanks for showing off my country!!!
I get to go back there in a couple of week with my wife and kids for their first time... we can't wait.
Just a note: the lady singing the anthem in one of the videos you posted is making up her own lyrics. She's very old and seemingly highly uneducated (sadly as a large part of the population), but very sweet nonetheless.
Cheers.
I stayed in Brazil for two and a half years - in Porto Alegre down in the south of the country. It is a great place to be and I'd recommend it to anyone. the quality of life there is great. Your hub really gets the spirit of Brazil across - great job.
Great. No more words...
Frieda, you're a tour guide waiting for a ticket. If you find one let me know the itinerary. What a great and colorful hub.
Great hub!!!! Adoruuu o Braziu :D
Seriously, a wonderful hub for an amazing country!
very enticing.I love South America. I haven't been as far as Brazil but im hoping I can see it now. Thank you for another thoroughly researched and interesting hub.
mhhh nice :-)
btw some more about brazil -> http://hubpages.com/hub/Rio-de-Janeiro-Travelogue
Great article! My husband and I have talked a lot about moving to Brazil...one of these days :>...
I am brasileira, and I do not find all this things you do amazing. I am sorry, grow up here, live here and you will see quickly your mind change. Brasilians are close minded, judgmental, racist. Sure its great for outsiders that come here and don't have to go thru the real HEAT we brazilians go to. But then again, maybe the reason why I love Manhattan. We are never happy with what we got. And that applies to your country too. Brasil its not all that !!
The Brasilian
A very colorful hub about a colorful country. The photographs are just amazing. Keep writing. Enjoy.
Hello!!!
I'm brazilian too and I disagree from what was posted by G Gomes. My country have a lot of wrong things like criminality, corruption and social problems...but we have many other good things too: the rich culture, the mix of races, the people kindness, the otimism, the nature. The truth is that we have two brazilian kind: One adopted the dictatorship period propaganda - Brazil love it or leave it! And then, they leave to Europe or USA. And the second kind is everyone that stay here fighting and trying change things. I believe this could be a better place for all.
Do you already know about Cartola and Pixinguinha? I bet you'll like.
Congratulations for homepage. Fico feliz por alguém reconhecer as belezas do Brasil (I'm happy for someone recognize the brazilian's beauties)
Obrigado e Tchau!
Olá de novo!
Hi again!
I was reading some posts here and I saw one when you ask why we can't use the Cerrado to plant instead... I don't know, maybe instead Amazon? (I'm guessing). But Cerrado have a lot of endemic species(few are even know) and it's so delicate ecosystem. He have the largest inundation plain of world (pantanal). The agricultural model developed in Cerrado is the problem, cause we are focused in agrobusiness, mainly soy. This farms could plant food, but I'm against all agricultural expansion in Cerrado(including one that goes to amazon).
One more music tip...search for Noel Rosa and Ary Barroso. Tom Jobim, João Gilberto and all bossa nova singers are inspired in 1930's carioca samba.(carioca = from Rio de Janeiro).
Bye bye
Tchau!
This is great. I've gradually been falling in love with brazil over the past year or so. Check out my blog for some of my experiences over there.
hey Frieda! How are doing? i am sure you're doing right. I would like to congratulate you for the valuable informations you are giving us about Brazil!NICE hub!
I am brazilian and new here at hubpages. Still learning how it works!but for now learning to you!Believe..hehe!
Hey.. i also love Brazil and its culture very much..i hope i could be the one who see Brazilian Samba..thanks for this hub
Primeiramente, sou brasileira.
Wow, great hub Frieda! Full of terrific information on Brazil. I was in Sao Paolo and Paraty about two years ago -- it is truly a land of great beauty and great contrasts, as you describe. I hope I get the chance to go back some day . . . My dream is to do New Year's on the beaches of Rio one year!
Uau, maravilhosa *-* fico feliz de ver o interesse de estrangeiros por minha terra *-* sou de Porto Alegre, sul do Brasil
