Antique, Vintage and Vintage Style Elecrtic Portable Table and Desk Fans
89There is absolutely no reason at all why a portable fan cannot be far out gorgeous, filled with style, and work like a charm all at the same time. And there is also no reason why the price can't be just as affordable as any other portable fan.
To me, ones surroundings is everything. Your surroundings set your mood. Not to mention the fact that adding history to a room can breath life into it.
Just like their vintage counterparts, the vintage style fan is not always easy to find. Places like Restauration Hardware and Pottery Barn are prone to selling out, and fast. For example, when searching for a most gorgeous vintage table fan that came in two sizes at Restauration Hardware, I was welcomed by the following prompt:
"We're sorry. Due to the popularity of this item, it is no longer available. Please select another item from our collections."
Yes, easier said than done. I refreshed the page a few times in case there was a mistake. In other words, when you spot one, especially if you were drawn to it by unknown forces, don't let the person next to you sideswipe you and grab the last one, take it home. Enjoy it. Covet it. Put in on display and let it do what it does best, service you in one of the nicest possible ways, that is beautify your surroundings while completely refreshing you.
Don't think that just because it's winter and the heater is on that you don't need a fan. Inevitably, there is always that room in the house that is especially warm, if not downright hot, even in the winter months. Portable fans are the best for these instances, as they can be moved around.
Those companies who chose to relish in the eclectic style of vintage desk fans, do a wonderful job of it. One would not necessarily see the point in searching for a true vintage fan. This is especially true when taking electrical hazards into account. However, there are many times when the style of a true vintage piece is called for. There is a simple solution to this quandry!
If you are torn, think price and think historical value and charisma. It is quite easy and inexpensive to restore a vintage fan in a way that ensures safety and admiration. There are many places about that will revamp the elecrical wires of your select vintage find, making them good as new, so to speak, without you having to give up historical beauty. In fact you'll find that most lighting shops will be glad to do the work for you and price can usually be bargained.
Don't forget to check out the wonderful links I've found (below). And any thrift, garage, yard, or estate sale you can seek out. You and your surroundings will be so very glad you did.

Frieda, really like this hub. I remember fans like these and I agree with you about their aesthetic qualities. Really interesting perspective. Thanks
Well, this was certainly a "who knew" revelation to me. See them all the time at flea markets and auctions, might be a good restoration hobby for my bored retired husband.
Vintage fans as well! Awesome! These are certainly classy--another brilliantly written, aesthetically pleasing hub =D
I love vintage stuff
I love old stuff well made and repairable better than disposable items
I am writing an article on the inventor of the household fan - your hub is bookmarked to link - thank you! Very well done hub!
I know people down here in the southland still using these fans from the 50's & still run better than the new models. They don't make em' like they used to....Great topic & hub!
Character, that's the word I would use for them. They add character. I agree, why have boring?
Awesome! I collect and restore antique fans, and some of them predate 1900 and are worth $1,000's of dollars to collectors. You should check out the AFCA, the Antique Fan Collector's Association, to see some really incredible fans since you are into that kind of thing! You can learn a lot there.
I like looking at the photos of the vintage fans. A lot of the times the old stuff seems to have a lot of character.
I fell in love with an old GE floorfan that I saw in Thailand a long time ago, since then deco breeze is my go to fan company.
You get that vintage look that won't break down in a hurry. Great lens, loved some of the fans here...
I like vintage style it so classic
Hi, Frieda! I am intrigued. I have the ugliest plastic KMart fan in my bedroom. The rest of the room is so cute with it's atticy feel. I call the theme 'your great aunt left you her country cottage and you have not yet changed a thing.' But the ugly fan. A vintage style fan would be perfect!
i absolutely luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv the ones with the BLUE BLADES.. i think its a bit pricey myself, but i seen it on the website WWW.SHOWCASEVINTAGE.ETSY.COM
Excellent collection -- and advice! There's an old GE fan (possibly dating from the '20s or '30s) out back in an old shed -- had never considered restoring it -- to tell you the truth -- not until I read your comments. Sounds like a worthwhile project. -:)
i like the fans
I love vintage. Saw one of these fans and they're a bit heavy
useful hub for styling ... thanks for sharing !!!! Cheers !!!
Living here in hot, humid Louisiana I still use both ceiling and table (box and oscillating) fans in my house to help lower the electric bill during the summer months. I have mostly the newer plastic fans along with an old black GE table fan. It weighs a ton, but it looks like it was made sometime before WWII and it really makes for a great conversation piece too.
Thanks for sharing.

Never thought of vintage fans. I like it!!! My s/o can fix anything, so it wouldn't be a problem to have to refurbish one.
Thanks for writing this and the ideas! :)
