If you're like me, you love the vintage style, and, vintage coats drive you nuts in an exciting way. And if you find a vintage coat with a hood, you're crazy in love. A vintage coat, especially true vintage in top form, is a totally fab find. Find one with a hood and you'll be admired and envied at the same time.

Why? Well, it's not like the hooded vintage coat was madea dime  a dozen. Quite frankly there weren't many out there and you'd be hard pressed to find a full portfolio of hooded vintage coats on the web.

Where have all the gorgeous Vintage hooded Coats gone?

This fact has always puzzled me. If we love hoods on our coats ever so much, if they (hooded coats) are the first to leave the shops come fall, if they are so cozy and perfect, saught after and useful, then why do more designers not go that extra mile and for goodness sakes offer more?! Honestly I've been baffled about this for quite a bit of my life. It really never seemed a fair thing. Once I reached a certain age, hooded coats were a coveted find, and, I might add, you will rarely see me without one come winter as I never settle; I seek till I find. And find you can!

While the hooded coat in general is difficult to come across, and I do mean a hooded coat that is elegant, sassy, adorable, mysterious, and even sexy, it is certainly not impossible. Especially if you go by way of original or second hand vintage... and if you know where to look - I've linked to some of these places below as a starting point. While I haven't shopped at any of these shops mentioned, they at the very least, offer a starting search point. E-bay and Etsy seem to be the best in variety for online shopping where vintage hooded coats are concerned, but there are a few more out there at all sorts of price ranges.

Chances are, however, that you can find a gem of a vintage hooded coat right in your very own town. Here in St. Louis the two best are Value Village (four stores) and The Scholar Shop (two stores). Price wise, Value Village is your best bet. They don't cost you an arm and a leg like The Scholar Shop will. Yes, I've seen vintage hooded coats sell for over a thousand U.S. dollars at the latter, then gone and found something just as exquisite, if not more so, at Value Village for 40-80 dollars (most of the time the price is MUCH lower - you never know what you'll find; I suppose that's part of the thrill).

The key to aquiring a fine vintage hooded coat is to

  • know what you're looking for
  • know what is vintage and what is not
  • know your second hand shops
  • look for your vintage coat at all times of the year, yes, even in the summer
  • by all means, grab it, take it to the counter, and buy!

OGS2...I generally, as a rule, have to wear coats with hoods.. Pacific Northwest weather is unpredictable... at best and umbrellas are too impractical (inside out with the wind, and all). Excellent! Love the pictures! A non-Pottery Barn hub!! Hugs!! OGS1

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Oh yes, I'm quite familiar with the unpredictable weather over in your parts. Thank you thank you thank you. Thrilled you enjoyed this one, OGS1! Wonderful to see you in these wee hours in the morning. =D

Very nice Frieda, I love hooded coats and Vintage clothing. BTW, checked out your ezine. It's fabulous. You all have done a marvelous job. The site looks soooo good. Did you use an on-line editor to build it?

Am I dead, yet? 2 years ago

Wonderfully constructed hub and I am also an admirer of vintage hooded coats and clothing. Brilliant information. Thanks Freida!

ralwus 2 years ago

You have made me feel so oldt.

kartika damon 2 years ago

I love this hub - very fun, and being a bit vintage myself I really get that vintage is cool! Kartika

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Hey alekhouse. Hooded coats are awesome! Thanks so much for checking out Eye On Life. Glad you like. I went through squarespace. The format was easy for me to understand and I could manipulate it well and it offered the best platform for my design style. I hope that answers your question. I can do, but don't necessarily know the technical names of things, lol. I'm overly right brained I think. Glad you like it.

Hi there Aidy. I figured you'd be a lover of vintange hooded coats. They have so much personality and are so beautiful, even the odd looking ones thrill me.

Oh ralwus, say it isn't so. And if it is, know that vintage is the best. To me anyway. I'm vintage too, you know! So glad you popped in.

Kartica, hello hello! Lol. Yes, I'm a bit vintage as well, and you're darn tootin' it's cool, way cool!

Jerilee Wei 2 years ago

Am probably dating myself as vintage, but I have fond fond memories of a certain maxi-length hooded coat and a leather one that just made me feel good to put on (even though at the time both of them cost me a couple of full paychecks).

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Well Jerilee, I would have done the very same, it would have been worth every penny, and I would have relished every wearing moment. Do you know that the 80's is now considered vintage? Yes, it is. I've been noticing it quite a bit these last few weeks online whilst searching around for a variety of "vintage" , 80's is included. Can you believe it. Never thought I'd watch this change. I can't say I'm really ever going to be partial to that part of the "vintage" years, I can guarentee that, lol.

TamCor 2 years ago

I love vintage clothing, and especially the coats, so I'm thrilled to see that you do, too!

I've bought and sold quite a few (on Ebay), but like you said, it's tough to find the hooded coats--I have a vintage hooded cape that I haven't been able to sell yet...can't bear to part with it, lol.

I was so glad to see you mention Ebay--there are some wonderful vintage clothing sellers there, and they take such pride in their items!

Thanks for the fun hub! And, oh, I'm dating myself, but I used to own one of those coats up in your pics, when I was a teen in the 70's! :)

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

No way, that is so cool, which one? I'm glad to hear you say that about ebay. I've never bought from there, just browsed, so it's very good to know that they take pride. I know Etsy does as well. Thanks for the read and the info. Love the new avatar too, by the way.

TamCor 2 years ago

Mine was just like the last one--the midi with the fur cuffs and hood! I loved that coat, lol...

I used to hang out on the Vintage Clothing Board on Ebay, so I got to know a lot of the sellers through it. There really are some super nice people, and they go out of their way to sell quality clothes. A lot of them sell on Etsy, too!

Thanks for the compliment about the avatar--it's from an old 1920's book I have on "How to Make Crepe Paper Flowers"--I just loved it, so I borrowed part of it, lol...

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

OMG you lucky!!!! THAT is a fab coat! Don't you wish you still had and that if you did you'd still fit in it? Well, maybe you would, I wouldn't. Is there a crepe paper flowers hub around your parts then? That would be way cool.

TamCor 2 years ago

Yeah, I do wish I still had it--it was WARM! And so comfy...

I hadn't thought about a hub on the flowers...good idea! When our daughter got married, we had a friend do the whole wedding with crepe paper flowers! They were beautiful, and looked so real...our daughter just loved them!

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Well, I'll be looking for a crepe paper flowers hub from you then? Oh excitement! And that's another thing. Coats used to be so much warmer!

Jewels 2 years ago

That first pic conjurs Katherine of Wuthering Heights fame.

csd1509 2 years ago

waw frieda that's a great hub! u got a lot information out there very interesting

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Ah, yes Jewels, it certainly does, doesn't it? Now there's a book I haven't read in a long time, and a movie I haven't watched in quite some time as well.

csd1509, thank you so much. And i can see from your avatar that vintage and antiques delight you much. That's a very good thing. =D

Benjimester 2 years ago

The two words I latched onto were "elegant" and "adorable." I heartily agree! I often see women who look both elegant and adorable in the right hooded top. I'm with you. I hope it catches hold like you hope.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

So glad to hear your (a guys) point of view on this, Benji. I hope the fashion world hears this! Thank you so much for commenting on that.

Lgali 2 years ago

very nice hub lot of good pictures

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Thanks Lgali. Great to see you.

agvulpes 2 years ago

What nothing for the guys. Come on Frieda our heads get cold to don't you know. LOL

All the same I must say it's a great Hub.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Of course your heads het cold too. Poor poor thing. Might I suggest a stylish fedora? Hemlock, with a dash of foxy orange? Thanks Ag =D

Anath 2 years ago

They are georgeous, I love that last one in the slideshow, the vintage wool & fur coat I can just see myself wearing it. Lovely!

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Terrific, isn't it? And the perfect length. Thanks for coming by and checking these out. =]

Anath 2 years ago

It was entirely my pleasure :)

Ivorwen 2 years ago

I love the slide show in this! The embroidered coat with the fur trimmed hoods looks so fun. I have a vintage coat that I love to wear, but it is lacking a hood, which is forever a problem.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Thans Anath. =]

Glad you enjoyed Ivorwen. Now see, designers really need to take our wants and needs into consideration! I hope they stumble upon this, lol.

Nakojua 2 years ago

I love your Hub!! the slide show was amazing. I'm in love with vintage clothing, and especially all those coats on your slide show. what is your favorite coat??

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Hi Nakojua. I so glad you love these. It's hard to say which is my favorite. If I was shopping, I'd be gaga over the russian coat which is the last one and is not in the thumbnail view. In the thumbnail view, I'd say I'd have to wear the first one, the third one (with the embelishment), the first and last ones on the second row, and the last two. The second to last one is actually my favorite in that section. Lol I thought I was going to get away with not having to pick a fave. But there you are. Which was yours?

Nakojua 2 years ago

my favorite would have to be the second vintage coat! it is Adorable and I love the color on it.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Nice pick. Love your site by the way. Thanks for popping back in. =]

2patricias 2 years ago

We are both fans of coats with hoods - this is partly because we live by the sea, which means that the weather is often very windy and umbrellas are useless.

Interesting and unusual hub - thanks.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Ah by the sea. No I don't suppose a parasol would do much good there but for the sun. A hooded coat or jacket is definitely a must have, especially one with a good tie or snap.

Thanks Patricia. And you're welcom. =]

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Just as Jewells said, the 1st picture reminded me of Emily Bronte sashaying through the moors. A beautiful coat. And a hood is so much better than a hat. I hate hats. But a hood adds warmth as well as romance. The plaid one? I remember those plaid coats, we used to call them horse blankets.

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Hey there Dolores. Did she? Awesome. That's so cool to have a hub talked about. *big smile* Horse blankets, lol, they sometimes felt that way too (which is probably part of why they called them that). Glad you enjoyed. Thanks so much.

mulberry1 2 years ago

Two of those vintage coats look strangely familiar; pretty sure I had ones like them at one point. I happen to have a hooded coat now. It's lovely actually, a black wool coat, princess style with a fur trimmed hood...hubby says it's "classy".

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

Lol, you probably did, as did I or someone I knew. Your coat sounds divine and I want it! Aren't hooded coats just the best?

HauntedIsle 2 years ago

Great hub - thoroughly enjoyed the read. I love all my vintage clothes - but especially the coats! Even if I do get greeted as 'little red riding hood' when I turn up for work in the winter! No one ever comments on modern clothes, but vintage is always good to turn heads :-)

Frieda Babbley 2 years ago

OMG, you're wearing one in your avatar. How cool is that. excellent color! You're right about that, vintage does always turn heads in the awesomest way. Glad you liked. Thanks for the read.
